#143: Location module not showing various locations

The location module is an issue. Users in different places aren't able to find suitable regions to set for their initiatives, so can't set up their profiles. I've looked for a list of the regions the location module uses but found nothing so can't help them other than choose random regions in their countries, which they're not happy with.

Setting to high for reply from Jim so I can bodge it while we work out how the location module works and do something longer term

Denmark: Fejo - can't find correct region

France: Le Coteau de Plombières-Les-Bains en Transition - can't find correct region

Hong Kong: doesn't work at all

A: is there a list of the regions that the location module uses that we can refer to to bodge it?

B: is there a location moduel information page and ticket we can work with (if suitable?)

users are finding the project profile add/edit pages loooong. Please 'de-expand' the 'high level' options where possible - the goal is to get them to fill out at least a little bit on the top...

also the text entry boxes are massive. ed has tried to tweak this but they're huge

TN.org needs to be able to communicate with other websites and applications behind the scenes. This could ultimately be to share data with partner sites (e.g. search on Permaculture association returns TT initiatives), but is initially to return requests based on lat/long from the incoming mobile application.

Install and configure so that mobile application can send lat/long requests along with content types (people, projects, initiatives, events) and TN returns location specific responses.

Initiatives want to add their events to the TN system onsite. We need an estimate on enabling this. Some details and comments from skype 14/9 (Jim and Ed):

Need new user role? 'Initiative event-adder'?

Use event fields as per 'initiative-event' type

Event also to be related to an initiative profile

Event to appear in 'initiative-event' stream in http://www.transitionnetwork.org/events/community along with CMS-generated events

(Documentation pending...)

The sharing engine needs releasing to DEV, and so far I've done the following:

Added the files to SVN at /sharing-engine/trunk (see https://tech.transitionnetwork.org/trac/browser/sharing-engine/trunk)

Created a new /web/news.dev.transitionnetwork.org.webarch.net/www folder, checked out the files.

Created a new file (news.dev.transitionnetwork.org.webarch.net) under /etc/apache2/sites-available which started as a copy of the main dev.transitionnetwork.org.webarch.net but with the addresses updated.

Symlinked it into sites-enabled

Set up Drupal's settings.php with DEV DB settings

Put a dump of the database onto DEV at /home/jim/sharing-engine.sql in preparation to put into the db with a database name of 'dev_sharing-engine'.

What needs to be done/help please == Server-side

the Apache settings file doesn't appear to be being used - Chris, can you help? Is it because the main dev site has priority? When I go to http://news.dev.transitionnetwork.org.webarch.net/ I get the current dev site, not the news one.

importing the mysql db dump into the database (am doing this now)

Website-side

export of panels from my machine

testing, testing

NOTE: This is not a requirement to move forwards, but is becoming ever more important... What we have works fine, but we have no upgrade path without significant work.

The Feeds module in use on LIVE is Alpha 11, and the module is now up to Beta 10 - so we're 15 unstable updates out of sync, 5 of which are Alpha updates that have non-trivially upgradable update paths.

In other words, this module has changed significantly over the past 6 months and John's feed importer that relies on it is very likely to be incompatible.

It might be easier to just uninstall feeds, re-enable and then try to fix John's Feed importer features... Or re-create.

Where it should stay as their local time. I have checked this and the system thinks it's keeping local time, so not sure what's going on. Bunging into phase3, sorry, as it's a critical problem for the users...

User feedback:
I looked at the events and I see spotlighting 2-4 am on 1 April and seedsavers as all day on 3 feb.

A couple of minutes later after logging out, closing firefox and then opening it again and getting micros sites ,the events at the bottom of home page shows spotlighting at 2-4pm on 31 mar and seedsavers as 1pm on 2 feb.

add automatic RSS feeds for CMS news feeds (one feed per CMS)

(Ed note: this will be manually added into the Initiative profile pages which will mean that the CMS news feeds are adopted by the SE)

Commenters need clearer differentiation between comments which are hard to tell which one you're replying to - atm they appear as one long block where it's not clear which comment has which functionality - can you add a separation between the comments?

e.g.:
http://www.transitionnetwork.org/blogs/josh-ryan-collins/2010-11/transition-currency-20-online-banking-system-local-money#comment-906

http://www.transitionnetwork.org/patterns/outreach/meaningful-maps#comment-901

and the forums

At the moment, the only way for users to see transition activity by location is to use the maps, or register, add their location, and use transition near me.

Add the facility for all users to add their location (postcode or town name) in an input field on the site and to return their local:

people

initiatives

projects

events

news (community news drawn from the sharing engine and localised by relation to the initiative profile)

This will require a:

new page with associated layout (can be shared template with transition near me?)

design work to put the location input field into the site

changes to location module (?) to enable this?

...

Add required modules (Services, oAuth, Multicolumn Checkboxes, Autoload etc)

Test updates locally

Push to DEV

Test

Push to LIVE

Get CAS and Services stuff working

decide on best process for Feeds module update.

Caveat
The Feeds module in use on LIVE is Alpha 11, and the module is now up to Beta 10 - that's 15 unstable updates TN.org is out, 5 Alphas have non-upgradable update paths. This module's updates need their own ticket.

We are using the 'imported event' type for 'partner events'. http://www.transitionnetwork.org/events/partner. This comes from our earlier references as these types of event were originally intended to be aggregated (where they are now generated onsite)

This is working great but the use of the word 'imported' is confusing people - we need to change the named references on the site - wherever it says 'imported event' we need it to read 'partner event'.

The image upload/display logo function is wrong (for CMS definitely, not sure about elsewhere) - users can't get their logos to display on their CMSs.

It says it only allows images 100x100 - 300x300 but only seems to allow images much bigger (which it then re-sizes to 100x100). Can't see how to tweak this myself...

Further to the WYSIWYG in the CMS having buttons that don't work, I have stripped the 'filtered html' buttons to the following:
https://www.transitionnetwork.org/admin/settings/wysiwyg/profile/1/edit

As discussed with Laura, it is useful to enable filtered html users to align their text. So I have kept those buttons in. But the CMS theme strips out all alignment.

Can you enable (left, central, right) alignment in all CMS items?

Is this a Laura job? Or a Jim job?
