It's not actually to do with the editor or WYSIWYG - it's a content type filter thing. BUT:

Filtered HTML DOES NOT allow 'attributes' (like style etc) in the HTML. This is by design and expected.
Allowing non-editors access to 'Full HTML' is a security risk, and a quick way to F Laura's lovely design in the A.
Alternative: add HTML Purifier and allow a new 'safe full html' format for certain users.

indeed. But the filtered html editor had style stuff that was being stripped out, hence it was a bit of a usability error. so needed to remove the buttons from the editor. The question was whether we could add some alignment (as per Laura's suggestion).

Therefore taken this as a no, and I'll remove the alignment buttons from the filtered html WYSIWYG and close
