intransitionmovie.com checks and updates

Description

The http://www.intransitionmovie.com/ site has been migrated to wiki:ParrotServer, the DNS might not have yet updated for everybody.

Laura -- could you check that the site is working OK if you get a chance, especially the ecommerce elements?

There are some outstanding updates, WordPress is version 3.3.2 need updating to 3.5.1 and there are 12 plugins with updates available:

18 installed plugins:
 UA affiliates
 UA affiliates-woocommerce-light
 UA akismet
  A backupwordpress
 UI bad-behavior
 UA bwp-minify
  A contact-form-7
 UA event-o-matic
  A transposh-translation-filter-for-wordpress
 UA usernoise
  A woocommerce
 UA woocommerce-export-csv
  A woocommerce-currency-converter
 UA woocommerce-dynamic-pricing
  A woocommerce-delivery-notes
 UA woocommerce-shipping-table-rate
 UA wp-customer-reviews
 UI wp-super-cache

Legend: A = Active, I = Inactive, U = Update Available

I'm happy to do all these updates but I wouldn't know what exactly to check to see that the updates don't break anything -- would Laura be able to help with a quick check that updates haven't broken anything?

Change History

comment:1 Changed 4 years ago by chris

A couple other issues that we could sort out:

  1. HTTPS -- we should redirect login and other forms to HTTPS, I seem to remember that I set this up once? In anycase it needs sorting out again.
  1. Tracking -- we should remove the Pwiki and GA webbugs from the template footer and install the wp-piwik plugin https://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wp-piwik/ as this will also allow admins to via stats when they login to wordpress.

Hi Chris,
Am back at the desk later in the week. Bit snowed under workwise currently, but in short - Re updates, some of the plugins since have been rewritten in their updates and will need to have data reentered (esp. The shipping table rates) and some custom theming especially with regard to ecommerce side would need to happen after the updates too due to Woo's changes in template calls. Had hoped to have done this late last spring, and again in autumn to tie in with postage updates to site, but didn't happen as wasn't fed needed data in time, then other TN bits munched up my time.

Will do a run through on my local copy here of what the impacts of updating core and plugins are likely to be if helpful, plus a list of what needs to be done theme wise, tho know most are related to woocommerce and table rates (as using these on other newer sites been working on) and also had prev massaged eventomatic to function in the way the site needed it, so I'd have to look at that (in dashboard, plugins, you'll see a note there about eventomatic and caution in upgrading)

Usually With anything WP I check out the change logs first for plugins as they're quite helpful and run everything first on local copies rather than directly in live especially when there's been such a big gap btw updates.

If the newer super cache will work on the older core WP it should really be updated due to the security breach last week with it; only popped it really for when site was new to help with if site was flooded with visitors, which alas didn't get a massive amount of traffic, not necessarily needed now possibly.

Will try to have a look later this week time allowing. Hope that helps!
Laura

That sounds very wise!

It isn't active, see the "I = Inactive" in the listing above, so we don't have to worry about it and can probably uninstall it.

Will try to have a look later this week time allowing. Hope that helps!

That would be great, thanks.

  • Add Hours to Ticket changed from 0.0 to 0.25

I have just had a chat on the phone with Laura about all the Wordpress sites.

Laura has updated the plugins that can be updated easily, this is a updated status list:

wp plugin status
18 installed plugins:
  A affiliates
  A affiliates-woocommerce-light
  A akismet
  A backupwordpress
  I bad-behavior
  A bwp-minify
  A contact-form-7
 UA event-o-matic
  A transposh-translation-filter-for-wordpress
  A usernoise
  A woocommerce
 UA woocommerce-export-csv
  A woocommerce-currency-converter
 UA woocommerce-dynamic-pricing
  A woocommerce-delivery-notes
 UA woocommerce-shipping-table-rate
  A wp-customer-reviews
  I wp-super-cache

Legend: A = Active, I = Inactive, U = Update Available

Since wp-super-cache and bad-behavior are not being used I'd like to delete these if that is OK?

comment:5 Changed 4 years ago by laura

Hi Chris
Fine to delete wp-super-cache and bad-behaviour

  • Add Hours to Ticket changed from 0.0 to 0.25
  • Total Hours changed from 0.35 to 0.6

OK, I have deleted those plugins using the wp-cli interface:

wp plugin delete wp-super-cache
wp plugin delete bad-behavior

And installed and activated wp-piwik:

wp plugin install wp-piwik
 Installing WP-Piwik (0.9.9.1)
 Downloading install package from http://downloads.wordpress.org/plugin/wp-piwik.0.9.9.1.zip...
 Unpacking the package...
 Installing the plugin...
 Plugin installed successfully.
wp plugin activate wp-piwik
  Success: Plugin 'wp-piwik' activated.

And set it up to work with https://stats.transitionnetwork.org/ -- an account has been set up using the website email address and Administrators and Editors can also view the stats via Wordpress on this page:

https://www.intransitionmovie.com/wp-admin/index.php?page=wp-piwik_stats

This is the current status of the plugins:

wp plugin status
17 installed plugins:
  A affiliates
  A affiliates-woocommerce-light
  A akismet
  A backupwordpress
  A bwp-minify
  A contact-form-7
 UA event-o-matic
  A transposh-translation-filter-for-wordpress
  A usernoise
  A woocommerce
 UA woocommerce-export-csv
  A woocommerce-currency-converter
 UA woocommerce-dynamic-pricing
  A woocommerce-delivery-notes
 UA woocommerce-shipping-table-rate
  A wp-piwik
  A wp-customer-reviews

Legend: A = Active, U = Update Available

TODO:

  • Laura needs to remove the GA and Piwik tracking from the template or settings.
  • I need to review the HTTPS settings to see if logins and all admin can use HTTPS.

Agreed at comms meet 21/11/13 to

  • de-commission WP site and shut it down
  • move standard content and payment options to TN.org
  • make film freely available on youtube and vimeo
  • two DVDs version still for sale:

-- 100 proper ones: £??
-- lots of no packaging: plan sleeve: £5 P&P

comment:9 Changed 3 years ago by chris

Can I suggest that we create a static archive of the site before switching it off the same as for Transition Town Totnes, see ticket:630#comment:2. It should only take 15 mins or so.

comment:10 Changed 3 years ago by ed

yes - as long as it's only 15 mins

cd /web

cd intransitionmovie.com/
httrack http://www.intransitionmovie.com/ -O "/web/intransitionmovie.com" -%v

Can we also have the file available to download in high res on the archived site?

comment:13 follow-up: ↓ 14 Changed 3 years ago by laura

I think on vimeo there is possibly still an option to allow
downloading. When I put the film up there eons ago when working at TN,
for private use by translators that (I think) was a high res one.

OK, great, another good place to put a copy, as they generate lots of different formats for films, is http://archive.org/

I have created the Nginx config at /etc/nginx/sites-available/intransitionmovie and the archive is now available at this address:

The archiving has completed, it's 113M in size, the log is here /trac/attachment/ticket/538/hts-log3.txt

Some images haven't been copied, not sure why, for example the NL flag:

<a href="nl/index.html"><img src="wp-content/plugins/transposh-translation-filter-for-wordpress/img/flags/nl.png" title="Nederlands" alt="Nederlands"/></a>

The odd thing is that the file is there:

But according to Firefox the image has errors and the md5 sums don't match, so rsyncing the content across:

rsync -av parrot:/home/movie/sites/default/wp-content/plugins/transposh-translation-filter-for-wordpress/img/flags/ /web/intransitionmovie.com/www.intransitionmovie.com/wp-content/plugins/transposh-translation-filter-for-wordpress/img/flags/

Things I need todo when the other steps in ticket:538#comment:8 have been done:

Ed: sorry this has taken more than 15 mins.

Not as far as I'm aware, is this something you would like me to sort out? I'm not sure if I have a DVD of the movie, if I did I could rip it and upload it.

comment:18 follow-up: ↓ 19 Changed 3 years ago by ed

I'll ask Totnes to send a DVD to you. BUT NB: this is not urgent and our maintenance budget just got a big haircut - see my email - so hold off any non-urgent work - including this ticket.

comment:19 in reply to: ↑ 18 Changed 3 years ago by chris

  • Add Hours to Ticket changed from 0.0 to 0.25
  • Total Hours changed from 1.25 to 1.5

Replying to ed:

I'll ask Totnes to send a DVD to you.

Got it, thanks.

One idea, this would save me doing the conversion, if we upload the DVD iso image to http://archive.org/ they will generate these formats:

  • h.264
  • MPEG2
  • Ogg Video
  • SubRip

If we put it there, and I think we should, as well as on YouTube, Vimeo and on our server, then we need to:

set a Creative Commons license as part of the upload process, so people know what they can do with your movies and video

https://archive.org/details/movies

Ed -- this is something you / the network needs to do, see https://creativecommons.org/choose/

My suggestion would be:

  • Allow adaptations of your work to be shared?
    • Yes, as long as others share alike
  • Allow commercial uses of your work?
    • Yes

These choices result in the Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-SA 4.0) which means:

You are free to:

Share — copy and redistribute the material in any medium or format

Adapt — remix, transform, and build upon the material
for any purpose, even commercially.

The licensor cannot revoke these freedoms as long as you follow the license terms.

Under the following terms:

Attribution — You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

ShareAlike — If you remix, transform, or build upon the material, you must distribute your contributions under the same license as the original.

No additional restrictions — You may not apply legal terms or technological measures that legally restrict others from doing anything the license permits.

This is in line with freedoms of the FSF GPL.

It is also an updated version of the one the Transition Network, has Attribution-ShareAlike 2.0 UK: England & Wales (CC BY-SA 2.0 UK), linked to from https://www.transitionnetwork.org/terms

If the above is all OK then we need to create an account at archive.org, I can do this but what email address should I use, webproject@… or a new alias like archive@…?

comment:20 Changed 3 years ago by chris

Turning the DVD into a ISO image is simply a matter of:

dd if=/dev/sr0 of=transitionmovie2.iso

comment:21 Changed 3 years ago by ed

  • Cc sam added

Email request sent to Rob/Amber?, Sam cc-ed. use 'webproject@…' for generic account p.o.c. please. Sam is on that forwarder now. If you need to be on the forwarder, let him know - I know you've been on it before...

The movie site SSL cert will expire on Feb 24th 2014, see ticket:687#comment:1

There are also some outstanding issues on this ticket, see from ticket:538#comment:8 onwards.

I have not heard anything regarding the suggestion to upload the movie under CC BY-SA 2.0 UK terms to post the iso to http://archive.org/ but I have extracted a iso from the CD and uploaded it to my home directory on wiki:PenguinServer.

If you would like me to create a static archive of the site I suggest that we should first edit pages like this one to link people to the new payment pages on transitionnetwork.org.

Just done the money for January - we're well over budget. So the absolute minimum only. Therefore - please simply remove the ordering page, or delete all content in it with link to TN pages before making properly static.

I have removed GA via the form on this page.

I can't see a quick and easy way to replace the product order form on these pages via the admin interface:

So I tried quickly redirecting these URLs via the apache config:

       RedirectPermanent /shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2
       RedirectPermanent /sq/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2

       RedirectPermanent /tr/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2

But that didn't work so I tried via the .htaccess file:

RewriteRule ^/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd/$ https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2 [R,L]
RewriteRule ^/sq/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd/$ https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2 [R,L]

RewriteRule ^/tr/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd/$ https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2 [R,L]

But that didn't work so I tried using a Location and LocationMatch in the apache config:

       <Location "/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd">
         Redirect / https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2
       </Location>
       <LocationMatch "/(sq|hr|nl|fi|he|hu|it|ja|pt|ro|sk|es|sv|tr)/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd">
         Redirect / https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2
       </LocationMatch>

But that didn't work, I'm puzzled by this and I'm spending too much time trying to sort it, so I tried adding redirects to the mirrored version:

        # payment page
        location /shop {
                rewrite ^/(sq|hr|nl|fi|he|hu|it|ja|pt|ro|sk|es|sv|tr)/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2 permanent;
                rewrite ^/shop/in-transition-2-0-dvd https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2 permanent;
        }

But that also hasn't worked, I don't understand why nothing is working, I must be missing something somewhere, but I have already spent more time on this than ask to so I'm simply going to disable the site on wiki:ParrotServer and switch the DNS to the mirror done last year.

The old DNS zone file at Gandi for these domains:

  • transitionmovie.org
  • intransitionmovie.com
  • intransitionmovie.org

Was:

@ 10800 IN A 81.95.52.39
www 10800 IN A 81.95.52.39
@ 3600 IN MX 0 mx.webarch.net.

I have now updated it to:

@ 10800 IN A 81.95.52.111
www 10800 IN A 81.95.52.111
@ 3600 IN MX 0 mx.webarch.net.

And I have added redirects to wiki:ParrotServer to http://intransitionmovie.penguin.webarch.net/ while the DNS update is happening.

Very sorry not to have been able to properly archive this site but there just isn't time to sort it out properly :-(

I or SAm could have gone in and manually done that I guess - sorry it was a pain - but we have something backed up and can remove the site now - yes?

The wiki documentation hasn't been updated to reflect the fact that the site has been archived, however I'm already 2.5 hours over the allocated time for this work.

OK good work all.

SAM: we need therefore make it clear on the archive site that it is an archive and not the live version. Are there clear edits you can do to it to show this?

CHRIS: we need to remove the database and files on Parrot - I know there's space but I don't see the point of keeping stuff on it if it's redundant.

Let me have the text for this and I can do it if you want (this would probably be quicker).

OK, deleted and I also deleted the Earth Inheritors and REconomy dev sites while I was at it, the space saved should show up here soon:

https://penguin.transitionnetwork.org/munin/transitionnetwork.org/parrot.transitionnetwork.org/df.html

One issues that was never resolved on this ticket, see comment:19 -- was agreement reached to release the movie under Creative Commons terms and upload a ISO to the Internet Archive? I still think this would be a very good thing todo...

  1. Edit:

We need a banner to run across the top of every page on the archived site that reads: This is an archive and is not operational. Please <a href="http://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2">see the Transition Network site</a> for up to date information.

  1. ISO to internet archive:

I never heard back from TN about this - will follow up - thanks for reminder

There are over 2.5k HTML files, these can't be manually edited in a short amount of time:

cd /web/intransitionmovie.com/www
find | grep html | wc -l
2753

Changing the all pages needed to be done before the site was deleted -- then it would have been fairly simply, it would have just needed a edit of the templates to add the text, now it is not a simple task.

The only simple task that can be done now it editing the front page and creating custom error pages.

I have added the suggested text to the front page.

Great.

As noted in ticket:538#comment:30 the archiving of this site hasn't been documented on this wiki. If this is to be done then reference should be made to ticket:698.

Hmm. Hang on. I'm thinking about the commercial use bit. I was thinking 'let people see it in town halls' but it could mean 're-use for my advert'. I think that enabling people to use it in their adverts or stuff like that would not get approval in TN towers. Let me check.

I'm not suggesting just attribution, I'm suggesting copy left, the same as the TN site, if anyone was to reuse bits of the movie they would need to also copy left their version. There is more detailed information regarding this in ticket:538#comment:19.

So I have started the task again...

The iso does upload OK via FTP but when when it's "checked in" it is appears to be deleted, which is rather frustrating.

I'm going to try the python method, http://wiki.creativecommons.org/CcPublisher_on_Linux

  • Add Hours to Ticket changed from 0.0 to 0.15

That worked!

The title and descriptions could do with some editing but we need to wait till it has generated all the various formats before we can do that, the status can be seen here:

So we should hold off telling people about it till this is sorted.

Note that the closest licence to the https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0/ that could be selected was the http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ but I doubt the differences are worth worrying about.

I have done some work on the metadata, one issue however is that it's in the "Texts" not the "Movies" section and there appears to be no way to change this, I have asked about this in the forum:

Ed, please feel free to update the metadata if anything else needs changing:

Do we have a full set of credits we could upload?

Does it also need uploading the Vimeo?

And when adding text to this page, somehow all the text after the stuff I added has been deleted, I don't know who this happened, what is the process of restoring it from the archive? Do I need to restore if from the MySQL database backups?

Really sorry about this, I don't know how it happened :-(

I have restored the page from the Google cached version, dated 26 Mar 2014 20:04:36 GMT:

I also have a HTML copy of this page.

I think the page also need a bit of sub-editing, I'd suggest removing the YouTube embed, keep a YouTube link but use the Internet Archive embed, but I'll leave that for others to sort out if that is OK. Once again very sorry about the accidental deletion of most of the page.

Sam please can you pick this up and finish it off as per Chris' suggestions? Thanks.

Hi all

Unless you are seriously multilingual you have to view the film with subtitles enabled.

It looks like Archive.org does support subtitles: http://blog.archive.org/2009/06/16/archive-supports-subtitles-now/ So i'll try and grab the .srt files from Youtube and upload them today.

I then propose to enable the English subtitles by default. On Youtube we get a massive drop off in viewers when the language changes and people don't realise they can enable the subtitles.

Once the .srt's are up and working i'll remove the Youtube embed as suggested.

Thanks

Sam

comment:56 Changed 3 years ago by sam

Hmm I uploaded the German subtitles, but can't see them on the video.

https://archive.org/help/video.php?identifier=transitionmovie2
Captions/Subtitles? work
If you upload files in the simple SubRip? format (suffix ".srt"), we will pair them with the video files. We'll even try to autodetect a "label" when there are 2+ .srt files.
So for example, if you upload a file named:
myvideo.avi
you can upload accompanying files named:
myvideo.en.srt
myvideo.fr.srt
for an english and french translation of captioning.

comment:57 Changed 3 years ago by sam

I couldn't Google much support for .srt's on archive.org, or a user forum with any useful info. I have emailed info@… to see if this feature is still supported.

Thanks

Sam

I had to click around some to get them to appear, not exactly sure what I did, I'd suggest you upload the rest of the .srt files.

It's the "CC" button in the status bar at the bottom right of the screen, by the volume control.

comment:60 Changed 3 years ago by chris

Ahh, "CC" is US for sub-titles!

It looks good to me, seems to be working fine. I think this page just needs a little sub-editing and this ticket is good to close as fixed :-)

comment:61 Changed 3 years ago by sam

I uploaded (all 20!) subtitle files & edited https://www.transitionnetwork.org/transition-2 to remove the Youtube embed. I also added a bit of text about how to enable the subtitles.
