Hmmm...

Though Views + GMap + Location can do postcode/proximity searching (and I've just tested, it works fine), it seems there are no results until you enter one. This is bad.

So it's in theory just a case of adding an exposed field, in practice it looks like we'll need to clone a load of views and have links between the different view pages.

Still want this? Admin or all? Even if it takes a 1-4 hours?

Looks like there's lots of work going on on this feature, so actually it's probably easiest to wait for the next version of Location where it will hopefully be fixed...
