Yup. I joined the group. Had no subs to it, but received this below. Please resolve - it's deffo not what they're after.

Greetings, Ed Mitchell,
A Community News has been created in group Haddenham: Transition Town High Wycombe New Year Party

Haddenham in Transition attended the Transition Town High Wycombe new year party today. It was well supported with nearly 30 people including a number of the local Friends of the Earth group.

  • Add Hours to Ticket changed from 0.0 to 0.33
  • Status changed from new to assigned
  • Total Hours changed from 0.0 to 0.33

Auto subscribe removed site wide BUT only affects new users.

Old users need to go to their main account edit page (https://www.transitionnetwork.org/user/4/edit) and uncheck the 'auto' box under messaging and notifications. They can use the link in the message to remove their own subs.

Recommend adding this line to the foot of the notifications emails:
"You may be auto-subscribed to notifications. To change this, please to to [user edit url] and uncheck the appropriate options under the 'messaging and notificationa' section."

Hmmm?

Great - ta - so I unticked this one, in all the users accts, correct?:

"Group notifications can also be customized in greater detail if required.
Automatically enable notifications for any groups that I join."

Then I removed the individual subs to the content types from their accounts. Should do it.

Is it also true to say that *all* registered users until this point in time, if they join a CMS, will be auto-subbed to that CMS' content types? ie this could be a recurring issue?

Not sure what your quoted bit was - mine was a suggestion to be added to the foot of a notification email so more people can change this otherwise hidden setting themselves... Did you want your quote as explano-text on the user edit page?

Because yes, ALL registered users will likely have this OG groups auto-subscribe setting set... Or at least those who registered while that setting was enabled - not sure how long/if it's been changed before now. It's a PITA.

I've tracked the "Autosubscribe" checkbox on the user edit page to a 'data' field held in the user table with a variable of "notifications_auto"... That's to get notifications for 'all things I post to'... Needs to be set to 0 but no 'nice' way to do so... Can do with a hacky SQL query.

BUT (drumroll) the "Automatically enable notifications for any groups that I join" checkbox is in the og_notifications table and CAN be updated en masse easily. According to the DEV database, 1182 users have this auto-subscribe option.

So, with some faff and lots of SQL, we can certainly a) get a list of users who are members of OGs, b) use that list to ensure only those have this option selected...

What do you reckon?

  1. My quote was to check I had unticked the right tickbox. I think I have as I haven't had anyone from Haddenham let me know otherwise yet (and we just accidently updated all those subbed to events that we'd re-saved the events so I would expect to have heard something).
  1. Solution to users being auto-subbed to OG notifications (1182) AKA potential ongoing PITA - yes do it as long as it's no more than (too much) time. Any clues how long it might be?

for reference, added this to the footer of the OG notifications template:

This is an automatic message from the clever robots that run the [site-name] website
To manage your subscriptions, browse to [subscriptions-manage]. This will be useful if you are getting too many subscriptions; you may be automatically subscribed by mistake. To change this, go to [subscriptions-manage]. Click on 'Administer your subscriptions' and uncheck the appropriate options in the 'messaging and notifications' tab.
