Description

Training web page outline: report from meeting

Training homepage:

  • 3 column layout as per the mock up sent by Jane
  • some style changes to be taken into account. All style across the whole site to be coherent (see Ben Brangwyn email) though so please accept style changes as suggestion only
  • body broken into two columns, RH column narrower

Main body: two columns

  • editable introduction field spanning both columns
  • each column to have editable panels enabling site editors to add and edit and style (within the site styles only) copy, embed and edit images, and youtube embeds

NB Jane has made the text and line spacing very small so it may not look as neat as the mock up. Likewise the very small youtube image is not technically known as possible. Jane has found a blog outlining it how to do it. Ed advised that we may be within the limits of the standard youtube sizing.

Right hand column: one column

  • Editable blocks with editable colour buttons (by site editors) as per the mock up

-- need to be able to add as many as suitable please
-- is it possible to put flickr badge code into the buttons?
-- EM requesting training calendar view. Also needed: a 'latest training events' view to go into a block here (separate ticket)
NB as before, note text size difference, Jane has gone to point 8 which may not be possible on the site as we need to stick within site styles. Also please note the links at the bottom of the buttons - is it possible to add links into button copy?

Training pages in general:

It is likely we will have multiple second and third level pages in training. These need to keep the training blocks only. See ticket #264 for context related changes.

Ed putting ticket to Jim as he realises that it's really an IA set up, which will be displayed with Laura's design changes, so it's a Jim job, and related to #264...

Initial thoughts:

  • Mock up sent by Jane? Haven't seen such a thing... Can you attach please?
  • 'Body split into two columns' - Erm, no easy way to do this I'm afraid... Can have 'body' field plus another 'body 2' field, OR two editable regions within Panels, OR a body and an editable region. No text flowing between them though. All depends on the 'base' content type for this page - probably a page or a stand-alone panel. TBC/Skype.
  • There's Thickbox that can expand to show a full video in a overlay pop-up when clicking a thumbnail instead of cramming the whole thing into too small a space.
  • (As you know) Text spacing/size NOT editable - house style will prevail.
  • The whole page will be Panels, probably (but not exclusively) using the 'hometus' layout since it provides for RHS blocks easily. Hence, any buttons you want with any crazy code and styles can be added - will be more 'custom content areas' in Panels editor.
  • We should come up with (and reuse) button styles made with CSS/HTML rather than images for just these reasons (adding links, styles, positions etc)
  • Not very sure what you mean by "we will have multiple second and third level pages in trainin" but I AM SCARED... Not really, just keen to get it right.

Popping back Ed's way for some mulling and replies, but probably one for the Skype-up on tomorrow (Tuesday)

EM to reply including a bit on adding video links to panes editing

comment:3 Changed 5 years ago by ed

could add embedded media fields to news/events/ and panes

  1. mock up sent via email (too big to attach here)
  2. all will be clear with mock up - the us framework could work well I think?
  3. looks great - as discussed, if http://colorpowered.com/colorbox/ is better, get it in - users will want to embed video (thumbnails perhaps) into panes - pop-up would be great. will open another ticket on this specifically as it's bound to be used more and more
  4. house style will prevail
  5. see 2
  6. agreed - the less images the better
  7. afaik at this point, the second and third level pages will be standard pages only with RHS blocks specific to training section

comment:5 Changed 5 years ago by jim

  1. moved to a new ticket: #283
  2. gonna chat with Laura ASAP
  3. No worries.

comment:6 Changed 5 years ago by ed

you know it struck me that other pages are going to want this almost immediately:

books
film2
support homepage
community homepage

is it going to be a do-able thing for me to set these up ... i'm thinking during august, make the site look a little less wiki-y...

comment:7 Changed 5 years ago by ed

AGREED:
JK made panel and pane page for this ticket as a template
EM visit JK in August for 'setting up panel pages' training day, using this as a template

comment:8 Changed 5 years ago by jim

JK to make Panel node behave like a Page node - hierarchy, tags, menus etc...

comment:9 Changed 5 years ago by ed

  1. call it /training-new

comment:10 Changed 5 years ago by jim

  • "Panel page"s now behave like Pages - hierarchy, tags etc.
  • They also have 'Video Links' to help stuff happen later. Included in /video view.
  • Erm, accidentally made it /training (didn't override) but since nothing else lives there and no-one is looking it may as well stay there (unless you kick off)
  • 2 col bricks layout enabled, all other blocks (projects, users) removed from any page starting /training as a starting point.
  • Content areas added as per mockup, tested video attachement and embedded youtube with no problems.

To Do

  • Right hand column blocks.
  • EITHER: Create another version of the panels that aims for 2-col content with 3rd on RHS for blocks
  • OR (and probably need this anyway) create a new 'Training' context
  • Add blocks according to panel or context.
  • Get feedback

comment:11 Changed 5 years ago by ed

looking good.

  1. pls explain why the video is attachment with the main panel and other panes around it? The training video attachment is very nice - can that be associated to any pane? or do we have to embed in other panes? etc.
  2. URL /training fine glad it didn't override the current live page
  3. blocks on RH side - the whole training section will want edit-able blocks in RH column and to show only those in the training section. We may want to show some of their blocks elsewhere - blocks to include:
  4. 2 x editable ones as per the mock up
  5. latest training events block to show these: http://www.transitionnetwork.org/events/network-training
  6. training events by stage blocks for each stage - to go into ingredients/stages areas

  1. Not sure what you mean... The vid on the top left is a 'context-referenced field' and is set via panels settings to use colorbox. The other vid is a straight cut/paste from Youtube. Just drag the 'Video links' field around to move the former. It's possible, and probably best practice now we have the /video page to add contexts for other pages (news/events/blog posts) to pull in other videos. Best to avoid direct embed unless there's a good reason. In other words, make sure the videos needed are in other posts/pages on the site so we can reference them. Skype?
  2. FYI URL aliases NEVER overwrite an existing page - it would have gone in at /training-0
  3. Gonna need either new layout or 'training' context - will put the latter in for now and add blocks accordingly. Will also need Laura's new theme. Will add the blocks now.

comment:13 Changed 5 years ago by ed

  1. ah i think i see - the video is assocated to the node and then we can move it around in a panel - so can we only have one video per node? yes, avoid direct embeds. will remove that one from here trainers not delighted :)
  2. sure
  3. aha was awaiting you to put in third column - sounds like a context with blocks to me? as the blocks will need to be shown in all the pages in the training section...

comment:14 Changed 5 years ago by jim

Training context in place, Blocks added per pdf, though don't have links... Also edited the video to make it 344 wide, which is max for 2main col/1 side col pages.

All at: http://www.transitionnetwork.org/training

Are we done for now?

errm. I'm looking at the blocks in /support/training and not seeing:

  1. blocks on RH side - the whole training section will want the edit-able blocks in RH column and to show only those in the training section. We may want to show some of their blocks elsewhere - blocks to include:
  2. 2 x editable ones as per the mock up
  3. latest training events block to show these: http://www.transitionnetwork.org/events/network-training

is this because I haven't moved the training pages around yet? or that the context isn't working? etc.

ALSO: can we edit the blocks style in /training to left align the text for the texty blocks

comment:18 Changed 5 years ago by jim

At present the 'training' context only applies to the new page and sub pages I made at /training... So the blocks didn't appear on the old training pages because the context wasn't being hit, but...

  • I've now made it so the old /support/training/* pages are also included in the context.
  • manually added style="text-align: left !important" to the <a> tags that make the coloured buttons to make the left justified. Ideally this would be a class available site-wide. Laura, could we add a CSS rule like .force-left .banner-container a { text-align: left !important" to the CSS so we can make any buttons in any panel/block left justified?
