Description (last modified by ed) (diff)

At the moment, the only way for users to see transition activity by location is to use the maps, or register, add their location, and use transition near me.

Add the facility for all users to add their location (postcode or town name) in an input field on the site and to return their local:

  1. people
  2. initiatives
  3. projects
  4. events
  5. news (community news drawn from the sharing engine and localised by relation to the initiative profile)

This will require a:

  1. new page with associated layout (can be shared template with transition near me?)
  2. design work to put the location input field into the site
  3. changes to location module (?) to enable this?

Man, that was a bit of a bitch... but it's done, and done with NO hacking or coding - pure views and panels. See: http://www.transitionnetwork.org/nearby

News is clearly conspicuous by its absence, but that can come soon with some heavy views work, or with the Sharing Engine.

The layout is, as you can see, a custom 2/3 panel affair, best use of space really... Panels allows ANY structure of rows, columns, regions etc... It's the best fit really, though completely flexible as always. The layout can be exported (once corrected) and applied to the Transition Near Me panel very easily.

Oh, and the defaults are 50 miles in the UK. Events show 6 upcoming (with pager if more) based on nearest date first, then by proximity if dates shared by events. All the other views are purely distance based, showing 10 only.

Let me know... optimistically marking as fixed... ;-)

(suggest pushing the News near me work into another ticket....?)
