Request from Shane:

I've noticed that the domain www.reconomyproject.org is still live and running. i.e. can surf around it. I think you set it up so that it would auto redirect to reconomy.org - not 100% sure about the technical spec behind how you did this but is it still working? I noticed this because a lot of the referrals on to our fb page our coming from reconomyproject.org rather than reconomy.org

I have fixed this by adding the following to /home/recon/sites/default/.htaccess:

RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} reconomyproject.org$
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://www.reconomy.org/$1 [R=301,L]

And I have updated the wiki:ReconomyWordPress page.

The changes I made have been clobbered, I guess by a WordPress plugin, however since the reconomyproject.org domain has expired this isn't an issue. If however it is renewed then using a separate account for redirecting the domain would make more sense as then the traffic to reconomyproject.org could be better tracked.

The time I have recorded on this ticket is for time spent on emails regarding the decision to not renew the reconomyproject.org domain name.

I have set up a separate apache virtualhost for reconomyproject.org and created a catch-all page with a meta-redirect and link to the page people requested but on recononmy.org and added PiwikServer tracking, for example:

Have already see a lot of traffic on this new virtualhost, the Internet Archive Wayback Machine bot, the Bing bot, lots of requests for RSS feeds from Google ​http://www.google.com/feedfetcher.html

It's also worth noting that I'm aware that the way this has been set up is far from ideal, eg:

However I think it is the only way to capture the traffic from real people in Piwik, if the plan was to keep the domain for as long as the site exists, which would be the best thing to to IMHO, then we could user a HTTP 301 for the redirect and this would be better for search engines and things like feed fetchers, but we wouldn't get the Piwik stats...
