Transition Culture HTML Problems

If you look at old Transition Culture articles they had hyperlinks and blockquotes, for example:

• ​https://web.archive.org/web/20070228081440/http://transitionculture.org/2006/01/24/local-energy-local-currency-local-power/

If you look at the version we now have this formatting has been lost and the first paragraph is a mess:

• ​http://transitionculture.org/2006/01/24/local-energy-local-currency-local-power/

The formatting wasn't lost when the new TC design was first deployed:

• ​https://web.archive.org/web/20080429205320/http://transitionculture.org/2006/01/24/local-energy-local-currency-local-power/

It has happened since then.

We should consider investigating what caused the problems and how they can be fixed?

This might be a task that Simon would be best placed to undertake?

The page referenced above contains:

This string is also in the database dump file from 9th December:

I suspect:

1. The site was compromised when Simon was running it.

2. The processing of text like this: called ["The Place of a Local Currency in a World Economy"](http://www.schumachersociety.org/newsletters/04jun18.html”Swann”) into hyperlinks has been broken somehow.

This issue was discussed after the meeting yesterday, I have attached a screenshot of an example page on the current site to illustrate the problem:

I had to make some changes to the Nginx and Trac config files to allow images of this size to be posted.

Annesley I remember you saying that there was a way to sort it out. It's worth spending 15 minutes investigating at most for now. We also need to ask Simon Lumpy Lemon, who owned the site originally for his input. I'll email Simon now. This isn't an urgent issue for Rob so we don't have to dash into anything.

Reply from Simon:

I'm away on holiday at the moment, I can take a proper look after the 14th when I'm back at work.

Two quick thoughts for now:

1. It looks as though the links and blockquote in that post are written in Markdown format. I have no idea why that would be the case, I didn't even know that Rob knew Markdown! There is no plugin running to interpret the Markdown, hence the messed-up formatting.

2. Markdown uses square brackets for links, which is also what WordPress uses for shortcodes, so my guess is the two are clashing somehow and the WordPress shortcode handler is getting in a muddle.

Let me know if you get to the bottom of it or if you want me to look into it after my return. It maybe as simple as installing a Markdown plugin (or it might not...!).
